ABC Gives Suprise Axe To 5th Season Of Nashville

Didn’t see this one coming: Nashville has been canceled by ABC.

The musical drama starring Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere lasted four seasons on the network.

While the show has been on the bubble for renewal pretty much since its first season, oddsmakers predicted the drama would squeak into another pickup for the fall. ABC even had new showrunners lined up for a potential fifth season – Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick (My So-Called Lifewere all set to take the reins.

Instead, ABC has decided the end the show.

During its final season, Nashville has averaged 6.3 million viewers and a 1.7 rating among adults 18-49, including DVR.

The day has seen a slew of high-profile cancellations over at ABC. The network axed long-running procedural Castle, franchise reboot The Muppets, Marvel’s Captain America spin-off Agent Carter, musical comedy Galavant, and freshman drama The Family.
