Apple Buys James Corden's 'Carpool Karaoke' To Make Spinoff Series

James Corden’s buzzy Carpool Karaoke spinoff series now has a home: Apple Music, the subscription-based streaming service.

Carpool, inspired by a hugely popular segment of CBS’s The Late Late Show, will consist of 16 episodes featuring celebrities riding shotgun while crooning with a yet-to-be-named host, CBS and Apple announced Tuesday. Corden will continue to present new Carpool segments on his Emmy-nominated late-night show.

On the new series, stars will “ride along and and sing along with the host as they visit places meaningful to the celebrity, sing tunes from their personal playlists and surprise fans who don’t expect to see big stars belting out tunes one lane over,” the show’s description says.

As an indication of the format’s popularity, the Spike cable network Tuesday also announced a rolling music show: Caraoke Showdown. Actor Craig Robinson will serve as host/driver for the 10-episode series, described as a game show hybrid of Cash Cab and karaoke. Showdown will be taped in Los Angeles and will premiere on Spike in 2017.

Corden’s Carpool segments became a viral phenomenon — yielding more than 830 million YouTube views to date — in the months after his late-night show launched in early 2015. Carpool segments with Adele, Justin Bieber and One Direction rank as the top three most-watched clips from late-night shows. Other performers who have joined Corden include Elton John, Jennifer Lopez and Stevie Wonder, and First Lady Michelle Obama appeared last week.

“We love music, and Carpool Karaoke celebrates it in a fun and unique way that is a hit with audiences of all ages,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “It’s a perfect fit for Apple Music — bringing subscribers exclusive access to their favorite artists and celebrities who come along for the ride.”

Production is scheduled to begin soon, but no premiere date has been announced. Once Carpool launches, a new episode will be made available each week to Apple Music subscribers in more than 100 countries.
