CBS News Apologizes for Killing Off Steve Jobs Via Twitter

A little birdie tweeted the wrong news today.

The folks at CBS News’ weekly web show What’s Trending posted word of Steve Jobs‘ death on their affiliated Twitter account, a mistake that was erased roughly one minute later after realizing they had confirmed no such thing.

As you can imagine, they’re quite sorry about errantly reporting that the Apple iCon, who is said to be in failing health, had passed.

“Apologies- reports of Steve Job’s death completely unconfirmed. Live on,” read the first mea culpa, followed by a tweet from executive producer Shira Lazar: “On behalf of all of us at @disruptgroup we sincerely apologize for the inaccuracy that was tweeted earlier today.-EP/ Host @WhatsTrending.”

Unfortunately, plenty of people saw the gaffe and the angry tweets commenced immediately:

•  tomdougherty: “@WhatsTrending There was a time when a news org wouldn’t have just blurted a rumor to the public. You’ve really cut your own throats here.”

• saldbuckeye: “@WhatsTrending how on earth does something like that happen? Seriously? How do you run with anything like that if it isn’t certain?”

• thenickguy: “@WhatsTrending Does unconfirmed mean “we’re not sure” or “we just made that up and now we’re taking it back”?”

• abghandour: “@WhatsTrending One more thing… you guys are assholes.”

Etc.

Jobs stepped down as CEO of Apple on Aug. 24, prompting renewed concerns about his health. The 57-year-old visionary battled pancreatic cancer in 2004 and more underwent a liver transplant in 2009.
