Chris Martin Surprises Homeless Shelter With Free Concert

Nothing makes us feel better during the holiday season than giving back. Some of our favorite celebrities share our sentiment, like Chris Martin, who played a surprise benefit concert at a homeless shelter in New York City.

The Coldplay frontman covered some of our favorites, including Drake’s “Hotline Bling” and a few of the band’s greatest hits like “A Sky Full of Stars”. In a report on TIME, The Bowery Mission’s chief development officer revealed that Martin stopped by on Wednesday afternoon, jammed a bit with people there, and staged a spontaneous concert to fundraise for the organization at the Mercury Lounge that night.

Festive holiday tunes were also on the agenda. And though most of Martin’s set was solo, he was later joined by two singers who had a history with the mission: having both recovered from addiction and homelessness as a result of their services. The three of them then performed classics “Amazing Grace” and The Beatles’ “Yesterday”.

“Chris Martin proved once again the power of one person to make a difference through The Bowery Mission,” said the mission’s director of outreach James Macklin in a press release. “As the temperatures drop and we serve thousands of lonely people during the holidays, Chris has lifted our spirits today.”
