Elizabeth Banks Aiming To Direct New Charlie’s Angels Reboot

Charlie’s Angels looks set to return to the big screen, with Sony interested in reviving the film franchise that foundered back in 2003 with the poorly received Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. It sounds like it’s off to a decent start too, with THR reporting that Elizabeth Banks is in talks to direct the new film.

Having made her directorial debut with Pitch Perfect 2, Banks has already made herself hot property, with the singing sequel going on to make nearly ten times its budget at the box office. Should negotiations prove successful, she will also produce the new film alongside husband Max Handelman.

The original ’70s TV show saw Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith tackle crime in LA as employees of a detective agency run by sidekick Bosley and a talking box named Charlie.

While later seasons saw changes made to the cast, it wasn’t until 2000 that the show got its silver screen debut with Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu taking over as the kick-ass female crime fighters.

The disappointing sequel which followed doesn’t seem to have put Sony off revising this female-led franchise, but no word yet on who could play the three operatives or their mysterious handler. We wouldn’t say no to Bill Murray returning as Bosley!

A screenwriter will no doubt be the studio’s next port of call, but it also remains to be seen how Banks will approach the film tonally. Given her work on Pitch Perfect 2, might a more overtly comic tone be in the offing?

Anna Kendrick should keep her phone close…
