Now in its 50th year, Sábado Gigante has become a staple of Saturday night television. But with rising production costs and a drop in the ratings, there is a serious possibility the iconic variety show could be facing cancellation.
Wonderwall Latino is reporting that Sábado may be on the fence for a 2012 renewal. In the TV world, right now is the time when execs decide which shows deserve another season. And several of the more expensive ones (like Fox’s Terra Nova) got dropped without a second thought.
Sábado is known to be one of Univision’s more expensive endeavors. In between the lavish stages and host Don Francisco’s hefty paychecks, it can cost the network millions per year.
Univision recently axed Francisco’s other show Don Francisco Presenta, which only added fuel to the fire. Plus at 71-years-old, perhaps it’s time for Don to hand over the Gigante reigns to the Pequeños.
