Katy Perry Expresses Sympathies To Catfish Victim Who Thought He Was Dating Her

It only took being catfished by a Katy Perry imitator to get the real Katy Perry’s attention. And the “Rise” singer’s response to a recent episode of MTV’s “Catfish” featuring a man who believed he was dating her for over six years is certainly worth ours. (Or at least a lyrical addition to Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic.” Don’t you think?)

During a recent appearance on SiriusXM radio’s “Morning Mash Up,” Perry addressed the catfish-ee, Spencer Morrill, who was convinced he had been exchanging personal messages with the pop star since 2012.

“My heart goes out to him, actually,” Perry said on the show. “Anybody who’s been fooled like that … people have dreams and people live in different parts of the world where not everything is always so accessible. We live on the coasts and we get stuff in a way that some other people don’t get, and I feel bad for him. So I didn’t really like to indulge in that because my heart, like, would die.”

By the episode’s end, Morrill came face-to-face with his scammer, a young woman (and major Katy Perry fan) living in Gloucester, England.

If you’re out there, Spencer, take solace in knowing that the object of your affection at least knows who you are and takes no pleasure in your pain. Now, like a plastic bag, drift through the wind and start again.
