Talk about a dream cast. This week, Variety announced that Michael Peña has signed on to play civil rights leader Cesar Chavez in a new biopic. Not only that, America Ferrera will be playing his wife Helen and Diego Luna will be sitting in the director’s chair!
Chavez is being produced by Luna and buddy Gael Garcia Bernal. Rosario Dawson has also booked a pivotal role, portraying Cesar’s trusted confidante Dolores Huerta.
The movie will reportedly depict Chavez’ time as the United Farm Workers head and several of his most famous protests. Diego seems very excited about the opportunity to spread Cesar’s message to a broad audience.
“This man inspired an entire community to see themselves as deserving of basic rights and to rise up against injustice,” he said. “The film will send the message that change is in our hands — Chavez did something everyone thought impossible with a fearless grace that magnetized an entire country.”
Look for Chavez to arrive in theaters sometime next year.
