Missy Elliot Drops First Official Single After 3 Year Hiatus

The internet lost its collective mind this February when Missy Elliott made a surprising appearance at the Super Bowl halftime show, and for good reason — we hadn’t heard from (or of) her in years. Now “Misdemeanor” is back with her first single in 3 years, “WTF (Where They From)” ft. Pharrell Williams, and it’s everything you hope for when the two VA Beach superstars collaborate on a track.

Missy’s rap style hasn’t changed, neither in the 7 years since her last music video nor since her last single 3 years ago. It’s still fast, hard-hitting and creatively syncopated, which works perfectly with the song’s drum-heavy, almost tribal and at times rock-ish backing track. It’s sure to be a dance hall hit, and if the track itself doesn’t have you tapping your feet, Elliott’s trademark crazy-talented backup dancers will make you want to move.

Pharrell does an about-face from his soaring falsetto “Happy” schtick to hop in on a guest verse that’s as hard-hitting as Missy’s. Pharrell doesn’t actually appear in the video, aptly represented by a marionette instead. You hardly miss him, though, because the puppet scenes fit perfectly with the fun, irreverent yet slightly dark video style that long ago became Missy Elliott’s hallmark.

The last time we heard from Missy, it was the singles “Triple Threat” and “9th Inning,” both released in 2012. Those were intended for a new album that never materialized, so there’s no telling if “WTF (Where They From)” is a sign of more to come or just another one-off. Either way, we’re pretty sure you won’t see tweens on twitter asking “Who the hell is Missy Elliott?”
