NBC Loves The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon So Much They Give Him Another 6 Years

NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt made the announcement at the top of NBC’s TCA Summer Press Tour presentation that Jimmy Fallon has inked a six-year extension to host The Tonight Show, a deal that extends his contract through September 2021. Fallon took over the gig from Jay Leno in February 2014 and NBC’s staple has been late-night’s top-rated show, averaging an 1.11 rating/5 share in adults 18-49 and 3.8 million total viewers for the 2014-2015 season.

“Jimmy has been an important member of the NBCUniversal family for 17 years. He is extraordinarily talented, hard-working and brings a level of creativity and energy every single day that is simply unmatched in television,” said NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke in a statement alongside Greeblatt’s announcement. “The success of the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has been nothing short of remarkable.”

At TCA, Greenblatt also said NBC was very pleased with the format change on Late Night with Seth Meyers, in which the traditional on-stage opening monologue is now delivered behind the desk in a Weekend Update style. “This is his strong suite,” Greenblatt said of the former Weekend Update anchor. “And the crazy election coming up gives him more momentum.”

Overall, Greenblatt expressed confidence that with all the ongoing changes in late-night, “Jimmy and Seth will continue to be the place to be.”

The Tonight Show, from Universal Television and Broadway Video,  is executive produced by Lorne Michaels and produced by Josh Lieb. Gavin Purcell produces.
