Nicki Minaj Keeps Those Chords Working Despite Wardrobe Fail at VMAs

Kicked off with a “Bang Bang” — and a wardrobe malfunction! MTV’s Video Music Awards 2014 opened with a hot medley performance by Ariana GrandeNicki Minaj, and Jessie J at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. on Sunday, Aug. 24 — and it got even hotter when Minaj suffered a wardrobe malfunction.

Minaj stole the show with a sexy performance of her new butt-celebrating single “Anaconda,” twerking with a group of scantily clad female dancers while rocking a green sequined two-piece number.

She attempted a quick outfit change to a black dress for a performance of “Bang Bang” with Grande and Jessie J, but didn’t quite make it in time, as she spent the trio’s time on stage holding her tight black minidress together while she attempted to multitask and rap. “We ran out of time getting the dressed zipped up,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

Grande, however, made her change. Accompanied by an army of backup dancers, clouds of smoke and an impressive futuristic set, Grande opened the set with her track “Break Free,” wearing a sequined one-piece and sequined over-the-knee boots. She then slipped into a black-and-white outfit for “Bang Bang,” a cut off of Jessie’s upcoming studio album Sweet Talker.

While Minaj and Jessie weren’t up for any awards at the VMAs, Grande received nods for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Best Collaboration for her Iggy Azalea-assisted “Problem.”

Other scheduled performers for the awards show include Beyonce, Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora, and Taylor Swift.
