In response to the horrific shooting at a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, Colorado, the NYPD is planning to increase security presence at New York City theaters screening the film.

On Friday morning, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said in a statement , “As a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the way of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is playing in the five boroughs.”

At least 12 people were killed and at least 50 people injured in the shooting. Among those injured were children, including a 3-month old infant who was shot.

24-year old James Holmes has been identified as a suspect.

President Obama released a statement expressing his sadness to the “horrific and tragic shooting,” and assured his administration would be “committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded.”

Mayor Bloomberg, meanwhile, called on Obama and GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney to detail their plans to improve gun control in wake of the tragedy.
