Coursework Will Include Watching The Comedian’s Specials

Yassin “Narcy” Alsalman — a rapper and professor at Concordia University — shared the news during a sit-down on the Jibber with Jaber podcast.

While the “Team Chappelle” course isn’t finalized, Alsalman is actively working on the syllabus. He also notes that the course will be celebrated around the upcoming 50th anniversary of hip-hop in August.

“I’m writing my syllabus right now, and, from what Dave and the community around him gave me, I’m gonna kind of celebrate that at the 50th anniversary of hip-hop as a community.”

Alsalman added that the course will incorporate Chappelle’s Show, along with “some of his specials.”

Yassin “Narcy” Alsalman Sticks Up For Dave Chappelle: “His Persona Has Been Colvoluted”

In turn, host Ahman Jaber jokingly said the instructor must “boycott the Netflix one,” though he responded, “No. Absolutely not.”

Shortly thereafter, Alsalman spoke on how he believes Chappelle’s “persona has been convoluted.”

“I think a lot of his persona has been convoluted. He’s a comedian. Knowing him, it’s not how people have painted him out to be. He’s made fun of Black people; he’s made fun of white people.”

He noted that, regardless of how people may view the comedian’s controversies, he’s “going to celebrate Dave.”

“I’m going to celebrate Dave and the community around him and the work that he’s done for us as a generation and what he’s done for us.”

Alsalman wrapped by teasing that students could “maybe” get a chance to even meet Chappelle.

“Maybe Dave will come, maybe he won’t. But that’s not really why I’m doing it. I’m doing it more to thank him and celebrate him and really write that history.”

Alsalman Has Led Courses On Kanye West & Kendrick Lamar

It’s important to note that Alsalman is definitely no stranger to teaching classes on notable Black celebrities.

Last year, he went viral after word broke out that he’d teach a class on Kanye West (aka Ye).

Additionally, he’s led a class on Kendrick Lamar and plans to teach other courses on acts like Black Star, The Roots, and Erykah Badu.

We should also point out that another Canadian institution — Ryerson University in Toronto — also offered a course on local artists Drake and The Weeknd, as The Shade Room reported.

Would you be down to take a class on Dave Chappelle?
