RADICAL DEBUTS IN THE TOP 5 AT THE U.S. BOX OFFICE, FOLLOWING RECORD BREAKING SUCCESS IN MEXICO
Eugenio Derbez-Starrer Is A Breakout Hit At The U.S. Box Office
LOS ANGELES – November 7, 2023 – Radical – starring global Latino superstar Eugenio Derbez, and winner of the Festival Favorite Award at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival – opened in the “Top 5” at the U.S. box office when it debuted in U.S. theaters this past weekend. Radical earned $2,658,047 on 419 screens for an impressive per screen average of $6,344. The U.S. success of Radical, from Pantelion Films and Participant, produced by 3Pas Studios, comes on the heels of the film’s record-breaking success in Mexico, where it recently became the highest grossing local language film in Mexico released since the pandemic.
Radical opened on October 19th in Mexico from distributor Videocine as the biggest local language film opening since before the Covid pandemic. As of November 5th, the Mexico cumulative box office is $133 million pesos and 2 million admissions.
Written and directed by Christopher Zalla, Radical was produced by Ben Odell, p.g.a. and Eugenio Derbez, p.g.a., who co-founded 3Pas Studios, as well as Joshua Davis, p.g.a., who wrote the Wired article on which the film is based. PaperAirplane, who have worked on Derbez’s past films for Pantelion in the U.S., handled the U.S. in-theater marketing for Miercoles Entertainment who is overseeing distribution.
Eugenio Derbez is a global superstar with almost 20 million followers on IG, who is known for his comedic roles in films like the smash hit Instructions Not Included, Overboard and The Valet. Radical marks Derbez’s first leading role in a dramatic film, following his supporting role in the Oscar-winning film CODA.
“We are overjoyed by the tremendous excitement that audiences and families around the country are showing for Radical,” said David Linde, CEO of Participant. “Christopher and Eugenio have crafted a film that authentically taps the inspiration, empathy and compassion in all of us, and we are really grateful to be part of this lovely film.”
“Once again 3Pas has made a film that the core Hispanic audiences adore with strong crossover appeal,” said Paul Presburger, Co-CEO of Miercoles Entertainment. “I echo David’s sentiments on our pride of being involved with this inspiring film.”
“Our distribution partners have done a tremendous job of building excitement and strong word of mouth. We are seeing incredible momentum at the box office both in the US and Mexico and we are looking forward to expanding the film to more audiences,” said Ben Odell, producer of Radical and co-founder of 3Pas Studios.
