Gremlins Reboot Working Fast To Get Production Started

Because a “Goonies” sequel isn’t enough to satisfy our 1980s nostalgia, it appears Warner Bros. has placed its long-gestating “Gremlins” remake on the fast track.

Ain’t It Cool News reports that the reboot is “moving quickly,” following several years of development. Last May, we learned that Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote the novel “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and the screenplay for “Dark Shadows,” had acquired the rights and will produce the film. There’s also been word that original executive producer Steven Spielberg may be involved again. (He and Amblin Entertainment have to give the okay before anything can happen.) Beyond those two news items, however, there’s been little word on the “Gremlins” reboot until now.

There’s been no indication that “Gremlins” director Joe Dante or writer Chris Columbus will return, and really all we know now is to await more information about casting, director and other details regarding midnight feedings to come. Dante at one point said no such remake would occur, but in 2009 he began to hint at a CGI-laden redo.

“I hear they’re going to make another one soon,” Dante told Empire. “I can see why — it would be stupid to let that title go to waste. The actors from the first two are too old to do a proper sequel, so I’m sure when the new one arrives it will be a remake of the original.”

Now that Warner Bros., which also distributed “The Goonies,” is hellbent on resuscitating these beloved movies, can we also get some info about the supposed “Beetlejuice” sequel?
