Open Road Films has acquired all U.S. rights to the action thriller THE GUNMAN, starring Sean Penn and directed by Pierre Morel. The announcement was made today by Tom Ortenberg, CEO of Open Road Films and Olivier Courson, Chairman and CEO of Studiocanal.
In THE GUNMAN, Sean Penn stars as a former special forces soldier and military contractor suffering from PTSD. He tries to reconnect with his long time love, but first must go on the run from London to Barcelona and across Europe in order to clear his name. The film also stars Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone, Mark Rylance and Jasmine Trinca.
Based on Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel The Prone Gunman, THE GUNMAN was directed by Pierre Morel (Taken, The Transporter franchise). The film was produced by Joel Silver, Andrew Rona and Sean Penn and executive produced by Adrian Guerra and Peter McAleese.
“We are thrilled to partner with our friends at Studiocanal, Joel Silver and the entire team behind THE GUNMAN,” stated Ortenberg. “Sean Penn is certainly one of the most talented actors of our time and it’s very exciting to be working with him in this groundbreaking action role as well as with fantastic filmmaker Pierre Morel who brought audiences Taken and The Transporter franchise.”
“I’m delighted to work with Open Road for a wide release in the US of THE GUNMAN, one of Studiocanal’s biggest productions ever. We are very confident in THE GUNMAN’s potential. We have an amazing cast with such talented actors: Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Idris Elba and a great director Pierre Morel who makes movies people really want to see!” said Courson.
The deal was negotiated on behalf of Open Road Films by Ortenberg, General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer, Elliott Kleinberg, and Executive Vice President of Production & Acquisitions, Peter Lawson, and by Anna Marsh, Head of International Sales at Studiocanal.
