2x JUNO Award Winning Artist Kiran Ahluwalia To Embark On A Six Date West Coast Tour!

Touring in Support of Her Critically Acclaimed Album, 7 Billion
on Six Degrees Records

Kiran Ahluwalia is excited to announce her West coast winter tour! She’ll be touring in support of her critically acclaimed new album 7 Billion, out now on Six Degrees Records. The six date tour has the New York City based artist going through all major cities on the West coast including her home away from home, Los Angeles and her beloved former city of residency, Berkeley. The Berkeley performance at Freight & Salvage will also be filmed for Public Television as part of the burgeoning “Live at the Freight & Salvage” concert series, to be aired at a later date. Check out all the tour dates here and also see below!

Kiran Ahluwalia is a modern exponent of the vocal traditions of India and Pakistan. Her compositions embody her Indian heritage, while embracing influences as diverse as West African Blues and Jazz. Kiran started learning music as a child in India. When her family immigrated to Canada she continued learning Indian music as an extra curricular passion all the way from grade school to an MBA in finance. A few years into her first management bound job she was haunted by the vision of waking up as an old woman and not having dedicated herself to the one thing that gave her life meaning – music.  She quit her job and went back to India to immerse herself in the rigorous life of a music student. After a decade focusing on her music studies she ended up back in Toronto as a bond trader. But by this time music was more than a passion – it had become a way of life. So she left the trading floor to start what would become a flourishing recording and touring career.

Over a discography that now runs seven albums deep Ahluwalia’s recordings have featured collaborations with legendary Malian group Tinariwen (with whom her YouTube video has reached over 2 million views), Celtic fiddler Natalie MacMaster and some of Portugal’s leading Fado masters. Her work has garnered wide acclaim including two JUNO Awards (Canada’s Grammys), two Canadian Folk Music Awards, a Songlines Award from the UK, and several peak rankings on the European World Music charts.

On tour, Ahluwalia brings alive her boundary-breaking songs exploring the human condition, with a style that’s uniquely her own. Accompanying her on these dates is a 5-piece group helmed by renowned DownBeat poll-winning guitarist and composer Rez Abbasi, along with Grammy Award winning keyboardist Sam Barsh (whose credits include: Kendrick Lamar, Norah Jones), Marito Marques on drums and Nitin Mitta on tabla.

7 Billion’s diverse and entrancing soundscapes are a melding of blues, rock and jazz, with Kiran’s soaring vocals leading the way. “When you take different styles and merge them together and you don’t want to simply cut and paste things, then you’re really developing a new hybrid genre. There are no blueprints to help you,” Kiran points out. “For me, it’s important to blur the musical boundaries between my own Indian background, and my other influences, including more familiar Western sounds and the things I love from West Africa, and in particular Mali.”

Kiran continues, “Lyrically my songs reflect my own struggles as an immigrant and a female artist and also speak about wider world issues namely cultural intolerance and the rise of fundamentalism. I realize most people don’t understand my lyrics and that’s why I feel it’s incumbent on me to compose in a musically universal way that will directly connect to the audience. So I place a great deal of focus on my melodies, rhythm and harmonies.”

With her mix of Sufi songs, Punjabi folk, and her own Urban Desi originals, Kiran will be dazzling audiences up and down the western seaboard with a mix of fan favorites.
