$512 Million Is The New High Bar As JURASSIC WORLD Tears Into The Box Office Record Books

If you thought the Jurassic Park franchise was extinct, think again.

The latest installment, the Chris Pratt-led Jurassic World, not only exceeded expectations, but demolished the competition, bringing in $204.6 million in North America, Box Office Mojo reports.

That makes it the second-highest grossing domestic opening of all time, besting last month’s Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million) to settle right behind the 2012 debut of The Avengers ($207.4 million).

But if you think that’s impressive, then this will surely blow your mind: The film also made another $307.2 million overseas, which brings the film’s total weekend haul to a whopping $511.8 million. Jurassic World eclipsed the previous record of $483.2 million, set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 in 2011.

I guess it’s a good thing that Pratt, who also starred in last summer’s blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, has signed on for more Jurassic World films. “They have me for I think 38 movies or something,” the actor recently joked to Entertainment Weekly.

Apparently there were other films also playing this weekend, even if it doesn’t look that way. Jurassic World knocked last week’s No. 1 movie, the R-rated Melissa McCarthy film Spy, to second place, with $16 million in its second weekend. The Rock’s disaster film San Andreas came in third, drawing $11 million. And Insidious Chapter 3 and Pitch Perfect 2 rounded out the top five with $7.3 million and $6 million, respectively.

The Entourage film fell two spots to No. 6 ($4.3 million), barely beating Mad Max: Fury Road ($4.1 million). Rounding out the rest of the top 10 were Avengers: Age of Ultron (No. 8, $3.6 million), Tomorrowland (No. 9, $3.4 million), and Love & Mercy (No. 10, $1.8 million).
