LONDON/PARIS – Ben, formally known as Ben l’Oncle Soul, returns with his fourth album Addicted to you releasing March 27th 2020. His name may have simplified but his sound has evolved into something greater. Tearing down the boundaries between RnB and Hip Hop whilst observing his past with echoes of Soul and Jazz, this album shares Ben’s collective influences from over a 10-year span.
Opening with the track Two Trees a song inspired by a trip to New York in which Ben found himself faced with an agency logo comprising of two trees sharing the same branches. When discussing the track Ben added, “It suggests rootedness, two seeds that fall side by side, two trees that grow and live their lives together.” This sets the tone of the album as an ode to love, the decision to feature eleven tracks marks a playful nod to the one plus one equation.
Wanting to work with new people, encountered in the most spontaneous of ways, Ben put out an appeal on social media seeking anyone with a great sound, regardless of the genre to send over their work. Within three short days, he had been inundated with songs. Melody rhythm and arrangement are what captured Ben and his team and the album as a whole is the fruit of this journey. Several writers and producers hailing from various places in the world reflect Ben’s new universal sound.
Penned as a duet Ben, calls upon the celestial voice of Yuna to feature on the albums second track Next to you. This was written during his wife’s pregnancy and highlights their love and commitment amid this journey into parenthood. A solo acoustic session of the song was released on February 27th to YouTube.
Marseille Hip Hop Group IAM is second up to feature on the albums third track All My Life, following a surprise encounter at Ben’s label after 10 years, resulting in the recording of the track described by Ben as “The last piece of the puzzle.”
The fourth track Addicted, coined “the albums strongest melody” by Ben has already received a buzz after a live acoustic session of the track at one of Paris’s busiest metro stations, la Station Jaurés, went viral.
Love continues as a strong theme throughout this album, Whilst I love this game likens it to a game of sport. The Best explores how the importance of confidence, both in yourself and others goes hand in hand with love, described by Ben as “the basis of all relationships.”
The expression of what a multifaceted emotion love is is laid out between the poetic imagery of You’re All I Need, the sense of betrayal and anger in I Don’t Wanna Go, the essence of loyalty in Call me ft Samory and the sexual declaration in I Just Want You.
The album finalizes with a sense of release in Let It Go “You have to stop protecting yourself when there is no risk.” translated on the track as, why take a raincoat when its sunny outside.
