Adam Sandler Calls Controversy Over His 'Ridiculous Six' Film Was Blown Out of Proportion

Adam Sandler is speaking out about the controversy over his Netflix comedy The Ridiculous Six, which saw Native American actors walk off the film’s set earlier this year over offensive jokes.

Sandler said that once people see the film, they’ll understand he wasn’t trying to offend anyone.

“It was just a misunderstanding and once the movie is out will be cleared up,” he told the Associated Press on Saturday at the premiere of his latest comedy,Pixels.

Sandler also said The Ridiculous Six, a satire of Westerns like The Magnificent Seven, is a “pro-Indian movie,” according to ScreenCrush.

“I talked to some of the actors on the set who were there and let them know that the intention of the movie is 100 percent to just make a funny movie. It’s really about American Indians being good to my character and about their family and just being good people,” he explained. “There’s no mocking of American Indians at all in the movie. It’s a pro-Indian movie. So hopefully when people see it — whoever was offended on set and walked out, I hope they realize that, and that’s it. It was kinda taken out of context.”

A group of Native American actors and actresses walked off the set in April, objecting to names of the characters and other content they found offensive.

At that time, Netflix issued a statement defending the film, saying, “The movie has ridiculous in the title for a reason: because it is ridiculous. It is a broad satire of Western movies and the stereotypes they popularized, featuring a diverse cast that is not only part of — but in on — the joke.”

The Ridiculous Six premieres Dec. 11 on Netflix.
