Adios! George Lopez’s Lopez Tonight Canceled

If nothing else, George Lopez can at least count on receiving some been-there, survived-that advice from network mate (er, make that, soon-to-be ex-network mate) Conan O’Brien.

After just two seasons in the late-night game, TBS announced today that it is pulling the plug on Lopez Tonight and will not be ordering up a third season.

That edict, incidentally, is effective immediately. As in, it could not get any more immediate.

A spokesman for the cable net announced that tomorrow night’s episode will be Lopez’s last. Seems like someone couldn’t get off the air fast enough.

“TBS has reached the difficult decision not to order a third season of Lopez Tonight,” the network said. “We are proud to have partnered with George Lopez, who is an immensely talented comedian and entertainer.

“TBS has valued its partnership with George and appreciates all of his hard work on behalf of the network, both on and off the air.”

Lopez himself has yet to issue a statement on the cancellation, either formally or via his otherwise quite active Twitter account.

In any case, Lopez Tonight hasn’t ever exactly been a ratings bonanza for the network, but Lopez himself has been a public team player, earlier this year going out of his way to welcome Conan to the network and happily (even if he didn’t really have a choice in the matter) moving back his show’s time slot to midnight in order to accommodate his redheaded lead-in.

Still, while Lopez will no longer be on nightly after tomorrow, he’s not exactly jobless.

He’s already booked to cohost the ALMA Awards alongside Eva Longoria Sept. 16 and also revealed on Twitter this past weekend that he has another sitcom already in the works.

Meanwhile, according to his show’s site, his final guests tomorrow night will be Raven-Symone and comedian Auggie Smith. Of course, that’s not accounting for any last-minute additions (Sandra Bullock, are you out there?).
