Just three days after Hilary Duff and her retired hockey player husband, Mike Comrie, stepped out for a happy family photo op with son Luca at a Los Angeles park, the pair announced that they’re pulling the plug on their three-year-plus marriage.
“Hilary Duff and husband Mike Comrie have mutually decided [on] an amicable separation,” her rep said Friday in a statement (via E!). “They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other’s lives. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time.”
Duff addressed the parting of ways on Twitter and reiterated that she and Comrie remain close.
“Mike and I are sitting here, we are so appreciative for all of your kindness & well wishes,” she tweeted. “Not an easy day but we’re getting thru it together.”
A Duff source tells People that “there was no major incident — no big event between the two of them. They really did drift apart. They have put effort and thought into this decision for a long time. They tried couples therapy, but in the end, they realized at this time, they work better as friends. And they really are great friends.”
Which explains their recent park time and Christmas trip to Disneyland with 21-month-old Luca.
The People insider adds that Duff, 26, and Comrie, 33, didn’t make “a rash decision” in splitting.
“It’s something she thought through,” says the spy. “She really does care about him, and he really does care about her.”
