Adamari Lopez and Hollye JacobsNORTHBROOK, Ill., May 14, 2015 – Allstate Insurance Company today announced that it will provide a Spanish-language version of “The Silver Lining Companion Guide” free to any Latina in the U.S. affected by breast cancer. The guide is a condensed version of the New York Times bestselling book, “The Silver Lining: A Supportive and Insightful Guide to Breast Cancer,” by Hollye Jacobs, RN, MS, MSW, author, nurse and breast cancer survivor and photographer Elizabeth Messina. The companion guide was specially created to provide important information, practical tips and inspiration for those navigating through every stage of treatment and recovery.

To assist in promoting the guide to the Latina community, TV host and actress, Adamari Lopez, will serve as the national spokesperson. Lopez was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and has been cancer-free since 2006. Since then, she is very active in raising breast cancer awareness in the Latina community.

“’Rayo de Esperanza’ by Hollye Jacobs is a very valuable tool that offers helpful information for those diagnosed with breast cancer, as well as for their family and friends,” said Adamari Lopez. “As a breast cancer survivor, I am honored to have the opportunity to participate in this initiative in partnership with Allstate and Hollye, and I am grateful to have overcome the disease and to be able to help others. While the cancer road is difficult to travel, with faith, a positive attitude and this immensely useful Spanish guide, it is my hope that Latina women’s paths will be made easier,” added Lopez.

The Spanish guide, entitled “Rayo de esperanza: Manual de apoyo para enfrentar el cancer de seno,” was translated from the original English language version, and will be available starting May 10 to coincide with National Women’s Health Week. This commemorative week is a national effort by an alliance of government, community and business organizations to raise awareness about manageable steps women can take to improve their health. Printed copies of the guide will be available through a partnership with Telemundo, participating healthcare providers, Cancer Support Community, Latino community organizations throughout the country, as well as by digital download at www.Allstate.com/SilverLining.

“In the United States, more than 250,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Breast cancer is the most common cancer and leading cause of cancer death among Latina women,” said Hollye Jacobs, RN, MS, MSN. “It is for these reasons that it is incredibly important to provide valuable, culturally sensitive and accessible information, support and guidance to the Latina community, written in Spanish. Thanks to the generosity of Allstate Insurance, sharing ‘Rayo de Esperanza: Manual de Apoyo para Enfrentar el Cáncer de Seno’ is an incredible and unique opportunity to reach the Latina community in a way that has never been done before.”

”The wellbeing of women is an important priority for Allstate and providing this free resource to our customers and community gives me great pride,” said Beatriz Zaragoza, a Latina Allstate agency owner. “The Silver Lining Companion Guide will not only aide women and their families in communities across the U.S., but Allstate also hopes it brings the important issue of women’s wellbeing among Latinas to the forefront.”

According to the Office on Women’s Health (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Latinas. Latinas are more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage, when the cancer is more advanced and harder to treat. Access to health care and information is one reason for this heath disparity.
