Amanda Knox Labeled a ‘Diabolic She-Devil’ at Appeal Hearing

In court to appeal her 2009conviction of killing her roommate, Amanda Knox was called a “witch of deception” Monday by the lawyer for a man whom she once accused of committing the murder.

“Amanda is … a satanic, diabolic she-devil given to borderline behavior,” Carlo Pacelli, an attorney for bar owner Diya “Patrick” Lamumba, said during a grueling day in an Italian court.

Knox, 24, who is seeking to overturn her conviction of murdering 21-year-old British student Meredith Kercher, came under attack at the appeals hearing by Pacelli and other civil lawyers.

A lawyer for Kercher’s family also showed dozens of autopsy photos showing extensive gashes and other bloody wounds.

Knox’s boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, 27, was also convicted of the 2007 killing in Perugia, Italy. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison; Sollecito to 25.

Recognizing the possibility that the co-defendants could go free due to problems with DNA evidence, prosecutors urged the court not to release them. Instead, in closing arguments over the weekend, they requested that Knox’s and Sollecito sentences be extended to life behind bars.

During police questioning, Knox had accused Lumumba, the owner of a bar in Perugia where she occasionally worked, of killing Kercher. Knox later recanted her accusation and Lumumba successfully sued her for slander after he was arrested and released.

Her accusations destroyed Lumumba’s life, Pacelli argued Monday.

He described Knox as “a spell-casting witch; a virtuoso of deceit.”

A verdict in the appeals trial is expected this week. If her appeal is successful, Knox could be free by January.
