Ambassador Angelina Jolie Gets Made Dame By England's "Most Royal" Lady Herself

In the U.S., we’ve long known that Angelina Jolie was a special kind of Hollywood royalty. Now it’s official — on Friday, the Queen of England named the Oscar-winning actress an honorary dame, in honor of her work fighting sexual violence and for services to UK foreign policy.

Jolie was presented with the award at Buckingham Palace in London, in a private meeting with the Queen. Her recognition is part of the Diplomatic Service and Overseas Birthday 2014 Honours List.

The official honor is called the Insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George.

Jolie is the co-founder of the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative, along with UK foreign secretary William Hague.

The announcement was made back in June that Jolie, along 1,148 others, were on the Queen’s birthday list for honors. At the time, the BBC reported that Jolie said, “Working on the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative and with survivors of rape is an honor in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime and I am dedicated to it for all of mine.”
