Andy Samberg Tapped To Host The 67th Annual Emmys Awards

With his formidable live TV chops from his years on Saturday Night Live and with his Fox show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, already renewed for next fall, Andy Samberg was considered an odds-on favorite to host the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will air September 20 on Fox. The Emmy winner (for co-writing the SNL viral video “Dick in a Box”) has now gotten the gig.

“It’s wonderfully fitting that we have Andy Samberg, an Emmy Award winner himself, as our host for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards,” TV Academy Chairman and CEO Bruce Rosenblum said. “Andy has excelled in all aspects of the television universe, both from behind and in front of the camera.”

With his Lonely Island cohorts Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, Samberg helped usher SNLinto the digital age and became one of the first mainstream viral-video superstars with the immensely popular SNL digital shorts. The TV Academy and Fox no doubt will try to tap into Samberg’s strong following with the young, digital generation as well as his live-performance skills as showcased in his musical bit with Weird Al Yankovic, which was one of the highlights of last year’s Primetime Emmys ceremony (you can watch it below).

“The moment the Emmy Awards’ host was brought up, we said it had to be Andy,” said Fox TV Group Chairmen and CEOs Gary Newman and Dana Walden. “He is fearless, hilarious, an award-winning comedian, singer, writer and actor with incredible live TV experience.”

How much of a shoo-in was Samberg for the Emmy-hosting gig this year? He was set before the TV Academy and Fox have locked producers for the ceremony. They will be announced soon. Emmy nominations will be unveiled July 16.

“Buckle your seat belts, Emmy viewers!,” said Samberg. “Like, in general you should buckle your seat belts in your car. In fact, even if you’re not an Emmy viewer, you should buckle your seat belt. It can be dangerous on the road. Also, if you’re not an Emmy viewer, you should strongly consider becoming one this year, because I’m hosting, and it’s gonna be a wild ride. So buckle your seat belts.”
