Angelina Jolie, Lady Gaga and other celebrities have fallen prey to the Internet hackers who recently released financial and personal information about a handful of stars.
Other notable figures who’ve had their financial privacy compromised this time around include Robert De Niro, Dennis Rodman, Michael Vick and NRA advocate Wayne LaPierre, according to TMZ.
In a process colloquially known as “doxxing,” a hacking group that was formerly based out of Russia leaked Social Security information along with financial details like credit card numbers and bank account specifics. It is now suggested the group has relocated to the French island of Réunion, located off the coast of Madagascar, as their website’s domain name changed its extension from .su to .re.
An FBI spokesperson told The Huffington Post in March, when the original scandal occurred, that it was looking into the website where the information appeared. No arrests have since been made, TMZ reports.
The cadre of celebrities and politicians involved in the initial imbroglio included Michelle Obama, Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Ashton Kutcher, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Sarah Palin, Kanye West, Beyonce and Jay-Z — the latter of whom was reported to owe more than $225,000 on his American Express card.
After the first leak, the stars whose phone numbers were published started receiving a slew of calls from fans hoping to get ahold of their favorite celebrities. It turned out, however, that the numbers were actually those of the stars’ lawyers, accountants and business managers, whose phones were reportedly blowing up nonstop after the information was exposed, according to TMZ.
Your 15 minutes have passed, celebrity hackers. It’s time to get a day job.
