Are You Prepared For ‘Groundhog Day’ The Musical?

“Groundhog Day,” the hit 1993 Columbia Pictures comedy, will poke its head up on Broadway in spring 2017, bowing in a new musical version from the creators of current Broadway draw “Matilda.”

The “Matilda” team of composer-lyricist Tim Minchin, director Matthew Warchus, choreographer Peter Darling and set and costume designer Rob Howell will collaborate on the show with book writer Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the “Groundhog Day” screenplay with Harold Ramis and is credited with the original story. Whistle Pig Prods. (Andre Ptaszynski), Scott Rudin and Columbia Stage Live will produce.

“Groundhog Day,” which starred Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell onscreen, follows a cocky weatherman who gets caught in a time loop that forces him to relive Groundhog Day again and again. The well-regarded film is widely considered a comedy favorite.

British director Warchus is a Broadway regular, with shows including “God of Carnage” (for which he won a Tony) and “The Norman Conquests” under his belt, and Darling won a Tony for “Billy Elliot.”

Rudin is an active stage producer on a string of starry plays (including current outings “Fish in the Dark” and “Skylight,” which opened April 2) as well as musical megahit “The Book of Mormon.” “Groundhog Day” is the latest musical that Rudin has added to his slate alongside “Shuffle Along, or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed,” set to bow in 2016 in a production starring Audra McDonald. Ptaszynski, meanwhile, is executive producer of “Matilda.”

The “Groundhog Day” musical will begin previews Jan. 23, 2017, ahead of a March 9, 2017, opening at a Broadway venue to be announced. Casting remains to be set.
