BARBIE Is Getting Her First Live-Action Film With Margot Robbie To Star

Margot Robbie has some big, hot pink shoes to fill.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Mattel announced Tuesday they would join forces for the first live-action Barbie flick, with the Australian-born Oscar nominee in the starring role.

“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery,” Robbie, 28, said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide.”

A release date has not yet been announced.

Back in 2016, Amy Schumer was in talks to play Barbie but she dropped out due to a scheduling conflict. The movie was originally slated to follow Barbie on a journey of self-discovery as she learns to embrace her imperfections.

“The film has so much promise and Sony and Mattel have been great partners,” Schumer said in a statement to Variety in March 2017. “I’m bummed, but looking forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”
