A film based on the Assassin’s Creed video games is being “fast-tracked” says developer Ubisoft.

It said it had now partnered with production house New Regency on the project.

Michael Fassbender is set to star in the film, which is based on the popular games series.

“The development of a screenplay is beginning immediately and the project is being fast-tracked,” said Ubisoft in a press release.

The Assassin’s Creed games, featuring a time-travelling hero, have sold more than 40 million copies worldwide.

Ubisoft will keep creative control of the “key elements” of the movie and its boss, Jean-Julien Baronnet, said it would be “a high-quality film that respects the lore and fans of the video game franchise”.

It’s not yet been revealed which period of history the film will take place in.

German-Irish actor Michael Fassbender is “attached” to the film, Ubisoft confirmed.

Box office success

The 35-year-old recently starred in Prometheus, X-Men: First Class and alongside Carey Mulligan in Shame.

Recent video game movies like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, also by Ubisoft, have done well at the box office despite lukewarm reviews.

The film, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton, pulled in $335m (£210m) worldwide from an estimated budget of $200m (£125m).

However, Ubisoft is said to have regretted its lack of creative input in the film, something it’s looking to put right in the Assassin’s Creed film.

The latest instalment of the franchise, Assassin’s Creed 3, is out on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at the end of October.

The game is set in 18th century America with players taking control of a half-British half-Native American character named Connor Kenway.
