BET Misspells Lionel Richie's As He is Awarded Lifetime Achievement Award

Well, at least they pronounced it correctly.

On Sunday night when Lionel Richie appeared at the BET Awards to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award, the show put his name on the screen for the TV audience – and misspelled his name as “Lionel Ritchie.”

But apparently lots of other folks don’t know how to spell his name, either, because the misspelled version of his last name started trending on Twitter.

Too bad, because those folks likely missed the classy acceptance speech Richie delivered after Pharrell Williams gave him the award.

“Soul is a feeling, not a color. Talent is a god-given gift and not a category,” he said. “And out of the box is that magical place where talent, true talent, goes to live and thrive and breathe, and may you never give it up as long as you’re in this business.”

Apparently Richie’s name wasn’t the only one that BET had a problem with.

“First @LionelRichie and now Phylicia Rashad’s name trends misspelled,” tweeted ‏@VintageBlkGlam during the show. “Isn’t Cosby on everyday? Y’all don’t read the credits? #BETAwards”
