Beyonce Wants It Known That Her 'Formation' Is Not Anti-Police

After releasing “Formation” and performing the song at Super Bowl 50 in February to a wave of complaints and controversy, Beyonce is letting those seemingly uninformed haters know that the song is not “anti-police,” but anti-police brutality and violence.

Snippets from her interview with Elle magazine are being dispersed little by little, and today’s tidbit is about the surprise song and video that stopped the world. Bey says that the message has been misconstrued by many, but she’s here to set the record straight.

“I’m an artist and I think the most powerful art is usually misunderstood,” she explained of the video, which portrayed a young boy wearing a black hoodie dancing in front of a line of cops, and has a wall with “Stop Shooting Us” spray painted across it. “But anyone who perceives my message as anti-police is completely mistaken. I have so much admiration and respect for officers and the families of officers who sacrifice themselves to keep us safe. But let’s be clear: I am against police brutality and injustice.”

She also threw a bit more shade at her detractors for the black pride anthem. The video is a celebration of black culture, and the song explains why Queen Bey loves the skin she’s in.

“If celebrating my roots and culture during Black History Month made anyone uncomfortable, those feelings were there long before a video and long before me. I’m proud of what we created and I’m proud to be part of a conversation that is pushing things forward in a positive way.”

Mrs. Carter offers insight on these topics, feminism and more in the full interview here.
