CBS Orders Pilot For "Limitless" Film To Receive Tv Sequel Series As Well As 2 More Shows

CBS is moving forward with its second feature film-to-TV adaptation of the season, picking up drama Limitless to pilot. The network has also added comedies from Modern Family alum Dan O’Shannon and Samantha Who‘s Tad Quill.

Limitless, based on Relativity’s 2011 Bradley Cooper thriller, landed at CBS with a hefty production commitment in October. The drama follows Brian Sinclair as he discovers the power of the mysterious drug NZT and is coerced into using his newfound drug-enhanced abilities to solve weekly cases for the FBI.

Craig Sweeny (Elementary, Medium) will pen the script and executive produce the CBS Television Studios drama alongside Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci via their studio-based K/O Paper Products banner. The company’s Heather Kadin will also executive produce. Cooper and Todd Phillips will executive produce through their Yet To Be Named Co. Relativity Television’s Ryan KavanaughTucker Tooley and Tom Forman will also executive produce. The company’s Andrew Marcus and Ray Ricord will co-executive produce. Leslie Dixon, who wrote the screenplay for the feature alongside Scott Kroopf, who produced the movie, are attached as producers. Neil Burger, who directed the original feature, is also on board to executive produce and will helm the pilot. CBS’ Limitless marks the first TV foray for Cooper and Phillips’ newly formed production company.

CBS’ Limitless also arrives as Kurtzman and Orci already have three series on the air: Fox’s Sleepy Hollow, CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 and rookie Scorpion, the latter of which has been renewed for a second season in 2015-16.

Limitless also marks the third feature film-to-TV remake to advance to the pilot stage, following a wave of adaptations this past development season as networks look to cut through the clutter in an increasingly competitive scripted landscape. Key to the remakes is having the original producers on board, as CBS does with Rush Hour and Fox with Minority Report.

Overall, Limitless marks CBS’ sixth drama pilot order of the season — off three from a year ago.

For its part, the O’Shannon comedy hails from CBS Television Studios and marks the Modern Family alum’s first pickup via his new overall deal with the studio. He’ll pen the comedy alongside Peter Warren (MTV’s Happyland) and executive produce with the Tannenbaum Co.’s Eric and Kim Tannenbaum. The comedy is described as a young ensemble on a search for girlfriends. For O’Shannon, currently writer/consulting producer on CBS’ The Odd Couple, the comedy extends his relationship with the Tannenbaums, who produce the Matthew Perry midseason entry. Warren will also be credited as a supervising producer. Other executive producers include Dennis Erdman and Clark Peterson.

The Quill comedy, meanwhile, is called Angel From Hell and marks his second pilot order of the season at the network behind Taxi-22. Produced by CBS Television Studios, the comedy centers on Amy, a woman who enters Allison’s life and claims to be her guardian angel. As they form an unlikely friendship, Allison can’t be sure if Amy is an angel or just nuts.

The O’Shannon and Quill comedies — the formats for which have not yet been determined — brings the number of comedy pilots in the works at CBS to nine, off one from a year ago.
