Remember how the highly anticipated casting of Filipino pop star Charice Pempengco on Glee fizzled into a quick storyline in the premiere? Well, the little girl with the big voice is finally returning to the show tonight, and E! News sat down with her exclusively for dish on the “benefit concert” that brings Sunshine back to McKinley High—and what it means for New Directions diva Rachel Berry…
Charice tells us, “People are going to be like, ‘Huh’? Is she going to turn into a spy or does she really mean it? Because she’s going to try to help the Glee club, for their benefit concert, but…I don’t even know what’s going to happen to my character, if she’s going to turn into a spy.” One clue might be Sunshine’s cunning new disguise; Charice tells us: “I got a haircut, so it’s a new Sunshine…no glasses, just a hat and colorful clothes. I kinda miss the big sunglasses, but maybe in the next episode.”
The young singer faces off with Lea Michele in at least one scene, as she tells us: “Rachel Berry’s not going to like the idea that Sunshine’s going to try to help their group, because just like what happened [in] the first season with Jesse St. James, played by Jonathan [Groff], he turned into a spy, so [in this episode], Rachel will be worried because she’s like, ‘You’re a terrible spy,’ and I’m going to be like, ‘No, I’m not a spy!’ ”
In other Charice-related news, her single “Before It Explodes” came out yesterday. Cowritten and produced by Bruno Mars, Charice tells us that the midtempo pop ballad is about the overwhelming nature of young love; its theme, according to the songbird, is “stop the madness before it explodes…we have to let go of each other.” Think of it as the opposite, then, of “Grenade.”
