Chaz Bono was in good company at the GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday night.
His mom Cher showed up to support her son at the event in Los Angeles.
“So much fun at Glaad awards!” the singer Tweeted. “I really surprised Chaz! HE was adorable,Said wow mom i was so surprised i forgot what i was going 2say!”
Bono, who was the first transgender contestant on Dancing with the Stars, was honored for his OWN documentary, Becoming Chaz, and with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which is given by GLAAD to a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender entertainer for promoting equality. Chaz’s stepmother (and widow to his late father, Sonny Bono), Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack, was also at the ceremony.
“It was an amazing night to have my mother and stepmother present me with the award,” Chaz told PEOPLE in a statement. “From a group I worked for 15 years ago; for Becoming Chaz to be honored as best documentary; and to be so enthusiastically received by my community. I was truly touched on so many levels.”
Also at the ceremony, Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson accepted the award for outstanding comedy series; and The Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson received the Vanguard Award for increasing the “visibility and understanding of the LGBT community” with the organization Straight But Not Narrow.
