Steve Bartman can breathe a sigh of relief.
Thirteen years after the headphone-wearing fan gained infamyfor interfering with a foul ball, The Cubs have won the World Series, returning the championship to the north side of Chicago for the first time in 107 years.
The drought is over. The curse is lifted. And what a game it was.
I actually thought about drawing a relieved Bartman for my cartoon, but opted instead to show the famed Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray smiling from check-to-cheek.
It was Caray who assured fans on the final day of the 1991 season, his last as the team’s broadcaster, that it wouldn’t be long before the team played for a pennant. “But that will come; sure as God made green apples. Some day the Chicago Cubs are going to be in the World Series. ”
Harry was right. In the famed broadcaster’s words, “Cubs win! Cubs win! Cubs win!” — Cartoon by Rob Tornoe
