Civil Case in Joan Rivers’ Death Settled

Civil Case in Joan Rivers' Death Settled

A civil case filed on behalf of Melissa Rivers against the doctors and the clinic that operated on late comedian Joan Rivers has been settled.

Jeffrey Bloom, who represented Rivers in the case, confirmed the settlement Thursday afternoon to NBC News.

Terms of the settlement have not been disclosed as the settlement was confidential.

Rivers suffered fatal brain damage during a routine medical procedure at Yorkville Endoscopy in 2014.

“In accepting this settlement, I am able to put the legal aspects of my mother’s death behind me and ensure that those culpable for her death have accepted responsibility for their actions quickly and without equivocation,” Melissa Rivers said in a statement Thursday.

“Moving forward, my focus will be to ensure that no one ever has to go through what my mother, Cooper and I went through and I will work towards ensuring higher safety standards in out-patient surgical clinics,” she said in the statement.

When she filed the suit in January 2015, Melissa Rivers had said in a statement, “The level of medical mismanagement, incompetency, disrespect and outrageous behavior is shocking and frankly, almost incomprehensible. Not only did my mother deserve better, every patient deserves better.”

A spokesperson for Yorkville Endoscopy said it settled the case to avoid protracted litigation. “Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the Rivers family,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

“We remain committed to providing quality, compassionate healthcare services that meet the needs of our patients, their families and the community,” the clinic spokesperson said in the statement.
