Coming to America Is Finally Getting a Sequel With Eddie Murphy Reprising His Role

Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as an African prince in the sequel to the 1988 comedy “Coming to America.”

“Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris is rewriting a script by original “Coming to America” writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, according to Deadline. Craig Brewer, who recently directed Murphy in “Dolemite Is My Name” for Netflix, will helm the comedy.

“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that ‘Coming to America 2’ is officially moving forward,” Murphy said in a statement. “We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on ‘Dolemite,’  and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”

In “Coming to America,” Murphy’s Prince Akeem traveled to Queens undercover to find a wife. In the sequel, Akeem learns about a long lost son, and must return to the U.S. to meet the unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda.

Production could begin this year.

Talk of a sequel first surfaced nearly to years ago when The Hollywood Reporter revealed Blaustein and Sheffield had been tapped by Paramount Pictures to pen “Coming to America 2.”
