Though the news about swimmer Dara Torres not qualifying for next month’s Summer Games may sound sad, it’s actually inspirational. In fact, Torres herself took the Olympic trials in stride. If anything, she wanted to prove the importance of giving something your all, despite the outcome.
Amazingly, Dara (who is part Cuban) competed in the last five Summer Games. She also has four gold medals to her credit and holds the record as the oldest swimmer ever to earn a place on the U.S. Olympic team.
Now 45, Torres still gave the trials one helluva shot. And incredibly, she missed the qualification by nine-hundredths of a second! Nevertheless, Dara wished her fellow competitors well and promised to watch the team from home.
“This is really over,” she told reporters with a smile. “That’s it, I’m going to enjoy some time with my daughter, have a nice summer and cheer on the U.S. team from afar.”
