Get ready Robocop fans, a gritty new reboot is currently in the works. And that’s not all. The film’s producers have hired Brazilian filmmaker Jose Padilha to step behind the camera and direct. Though it’s still in the pre-production stages, Jose had quite a lot to say about the project to ComingSoon.net.
“The concept of RoboCop is brilliant,” he explained. “I have my take on it. In the first [film] when Alex Murphy is shot, gunned down, then you see some hospitals and stuff and then you cut to him as RoboCop. My movie is between those two cuts.”
Outside of the famous metal lawman, the original Robocop gained quite a bit of notoriety for its gritty realism. And Padilha knows that style well. His Elite Squad movies featured brutal police gun battles and were even criticized for excessive violence.
But for die-hard action fans, that’s a blessing. Jose is an ideal candidate to provide insight into Robocop’s dark world. But don’t expect any South American hunks to step inside the computerized suit. Padilha appears to be adamant that the character stay true to its Detroit City roots.
“We need an American Robocop, he went on to say. “Robocop is an American guy, his name is Alex Murphy.”
