Director Richard Donner says 'Goonies 2' is happening

Goonies never say die, and neither does director Richard Donner, apparently.

Donner recently told TMZ that a “Goonies” sequel is still in the works, though there are doubts regarding how active the project is.

Asked whether he’d ever do another comic book movie, Donner replied “if you call ‘Goonies’ a comic book,” before adding “we’re doing a sequel.” (For the record, we would not call “‘The Goonies” a comic book.)

However, the Internet is littered with videos and stories of past-their-prime filmmakers and antiquated actors insisting that sequels to our favorite films are coming to theaters soon, as talk is a lot cheaper than making an actual movie.

Dan Aykroyd spent more than a decade telling reporters that “Ghostbusters 3” was right around the corner, and while that one is finally heating up, “The Goonies” never had the same mass appeal or brand recognition.

Asked by TMZ which cast members from Warner Bros.’ original 1986 film might return for the “sequel,” Donner said “hopefully all of them!”

A spokesperson for Warner Bros. did immediately reply to request for comment.

As great as “The Goonies” was and still is, the film is one example of ’80s childhood nostalgia that Hollywood doesn’t need to revisit, since the cult classic simply cannot be improved upon. Corey Feldman doesn’t belong anywhere near a big screen these days and Josh Brolin probably has bigger fish to fry as well.

So while Sean Astin may be willing to “bet his children” on a sequel, as he told IGN last year, this reporter would wager his own non-existent kids that “Goonies 2” is no more likely to happen than “Titanic 2.”

The Truffle Shuffle should and likely will stay in the past, which is where it belongs.
