DJ Laz Leaving Power 96 After 22 Years On The Air

DJ Laz Leaving Power 96 After 22 Years On The Air 2

South Floridians’ morning commutes are going to get worse. That’s because morning DJ (and Miami booty bass ambassador) DJ Laz has announced he’s leaving Power 96.

Laz, AKA Lazaro Mendez, has been a DJ with the radio station for 22 years. He was also a central figure in the boom of Miami booty bass in the early 90s, releasing his own original albums and singles.

There aren’t a lot of details about Miami’s most popular DJ’s sudden departure — only that he will “move on and explore other professional opportunities,” according to an official statement by Joe Bell, Vice President & Market Manager for Beasley Broadcast Miami, Power 96’s parent company.

It’s been a hard year for the radio DJ. Last September, Laz was indirectly involved in a murder/suicide in Miramar when an audio engineer used one of the DJ’s guns to kill his wife and mother as well as himself.

Laz’s morning cohosts Afrika and The Big Lip Bandit will stay on air for Power 96’s a.m. show as the station looks for a third DJ to replace Laz.

“DJ Laz is Power 96,” an anonymous employee at the station told NBC Miami. “It’s sad, but life goes on.”

Laz started DJing at age 15, mixing at local clubs and at Hot 105 FM before starting with Power 96. In 1991, he signed a deal with Pandisc, releasing the single “Mami El Negro,” which made it onto Billboard’s Top 100.
