Emma Stone Opens Up On Directors Giving Away Her Improv Jokes To Male Co-Stars

Emma Stone is about to hit the silver screen once again in La La Land, but ahead of the buzzed-about film’s wide release, the actress has called out Hollywood’s sexism problem.

In a new profile by Rolling Stone, Stone discusses some of the troubling behavior she’s encountered as a woman on set.

“There are times in the past, making a movie, when I’ve been told that I’m hindering the process by bringing up an opinion or an idea,” she said. “I hesitate to make it about being a woman, but there have been times when I’ve improvised, they’ve laughed at my joke and then given it to my male co-star. Given my joke away.”

“Or it’s been me saying, ‘I really don’t think this line is gonna work,’ and being told, ‘Just say it, just say it, if it doesn’t work we’ll cut it out,'” she continued. “And they didn’t cut it out, and it really didn’t work!”

At this point in the interview, Stone asked to go off-the-record before elaborating further.

When the recorder was turned back on, the actress went on to reveal that she’s not overly excited by the idea of writing or directing films of her own. “Coming out of improv, where everything’s so reliant on the team, it’s still hard for me to be out front — even when it’s a big role,” she said. “I like being a cog in the machine.”

La La Land hits theatres on Christmas Day (December 25). Before it does, get in the know with Exclaim!’s list of 8 Facts You Didn’t Know About the Making of La La Land.
