First ‘The Flash’ Trailer from The CW Network

First ‘The Flash’ Trailer from The CW Network

Here’s a Flash fact: the upcoming CW superhero drama has gotten off on the right foot.

DC Comics’ speedy hero burned his image into viewers’ retinas in a 5-minute, 22-second trailer that hit the Internet on Thursday, the same day in which the network announced “The Flash” would anchor its Tuesday night lineup this Fall.

The trailer gives fans the first real glimpse of actor Grant Gustin (“Glee”) as police scientist Barry Allen, who is granted super speed after being struck by lightning.

The CW is hoping that lightning will strike twice and the new show will match the popularity of the hero’s Justice League teammate, Green Lantern. In fact Stephen Amell makes a cameo in his “Arrow” garb, advising his newly empowered protégé to become a guardian angel for his own city.

“I don’t think that bolt of lightning struck you, I think it chose,” Amell says in his best super hero voice.

The cast includes a super team of veteran names including “Law & Order” vet Jesse L. Martin, as (what else?) a detective, and John Wesley Shipp, who played The Flash on the short-lived series that ran in 1990-91.

Even better news for nerds is that The Flash won’t be restricted to chasing bank robbers in the series, with the Weather Wizard (Chad Rook) the first of the character’s famous rogue’s gallery imported to the small screen. Judging by the footage, the story seems to hew close to the comic book source material, with Allen investigating the death of his mother, a crime he witnessed as an 11-year-old that seemed to be caused by another super-fast figure.

The trailer also the full look of the TV-version of The Flash’s famous scarlet and yellow costume — if one watched it in slow motion.

Designed by Colleen Atwood — who won Academy Awards for “Chicago” (2003), “Memoirs of a Geisha” (2006) and “Alice in Wonderland” (2011) — the new muted red costume trades the Mercury-inspired winged earpieces from the comics for lightning bolts.

“Arrow’s” Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg are onboard as executive producers on the show, joined by “The Flash” comic book writer Geoff Johns.
