From Survivor to Governor? Rupert Boneham Makes His Indiana Run for Office Official!

He earned enough audience votes to win Survivor’million-dollar fan favorite prize. Now Rupert Boneham is adding his name to another ballot: governor of Indiana.

After testing the waters with a website and exploratory committee , the fuzzy-faced reality star determined there was enough interest in his campaign for him to make a serious run, per the Indiana Daily Student.

So what’s his platform?

Boneham, who is seeking a nomination on the Libertarian ticket, explained that he wants limited government interference in both economic and social issues.

“I have only one interest: empowering Hoosiers to give back to their communities,” he said in a speech announcing his candidacy for the 2012 election. “If the government puts up roadblocks, then they should be repealed.”

Boneham, who has competed in three seasons of Survivor, pitched his qualifications for office to fans in an open letter posted on his website this summer.

“While I may be best known for my time spent on the television show Survivor, I feel my greatest achievement has been working with troubled youth through my non-profit charity, Rupert’s Kids,” Boneham wrote. “With Rupert’s Kids we have successfully taken youth with troubled pasts and given them a sense of purpose and self worth while opening a world of opportunity to them. By helping them become confident and productive members of society they learn the value of education and a strong work ethic.”

The tie-dyed, wild-haired reality star isn’t the first celebrity to toss his hat in the ring—both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura had successful gubernatorial runs, and Alec Baldwin may campaign in the next New York City mayoral race.
