We’ve seen Latinas dominate the world of the fashion, the world of film and the world of music. But on the standup stage, Hispanic women are few and far between. Thankfully Gina Brillon is breaking down that barrier, with a shrewd brand of comedy and a new TV deal.
Brillon recently became the first Latina to win NBC’s “Stand Up for Diversity Showcase.” Beating out 450 contestants, the 32-year-old Bronx native thoroughly impressed the network’s talent scouts and is now attached to a 2013 holding deal.
If all goes according to plan, Gina will start appearing on NBC sitcoms this year. And if she can impress enough TV viewers, there is always the possibility that she could land her own show.
For now though, Brillon is thrilled to be entertaining crowds and trying out her multicultural jokes on a wider audience.
“I love what I do,” she told NBC Latino. “To watch a roomful of people just laughing and forgetting their problems for a little while…I love it.”
