Martin Scorsese has working on another larger than life project, and HBO wants to to make it come true.
HBO has ordered up a brand new series “Cortés” which will dramatize the life of 16th century Spanish conquistador,Hernán Cortés. Cortés is known as the man who led the to the downfall of the Aztec empire. Scorsese will be retelling Cortés’s achievements and setbacks, as well telling the story of Malinche, the Mayan girl who helped him conquer the Aztecs. Cortés, Malinche and the Aztec leader, Montezuma, will all be prominent figure roles in the story.
Currently signed on to direct and executive produce, Scorsese according to Deadline will be joined by Benecio del Toro to aid in producuction. It is yet unconfirmed, if Del Toro will be acting as well. well. Cortes is also to be executive produced by Laura Bickford, Del Toro’s producing partner on Che. Scorsese and Del Toro will all be joined by Del Toro’s manager Rick Yorn and Emma Tillinger Koskoff, president of production for Scorsese’s Sikelia Prods.
Already familiar with HBO’s expectations, after his previous work with them on the series premiere for Boardwalk Empire, Scorsese is also working on directing an as yet-to-be-title Rock ‘N’ Roll drama with Mick Jagger and Boardwalk Empire‘s Terence Winter. The series explores the drug- and sex-fueled music business in 1970s New York.
