Herbalife Exposé Documentary BETTING ON ZERO Coming to Theaters March 10th

New York, NY – January 23, 2017 – Today, Gunpowder & Sky Distribution announced that March 10th will be the official date for the theatrical release of the critically-acclaimed film BETTING ON ZERO. The film, which premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival and was featured on HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” has continued to grab headlines and draw  sell-out crowds on the film festival circuit over the past year.

From ‘Darfur Now’ writer/director Ted Braun comes a riveting docu-thriller following controversial hedge fund titan Bill Ackman as he puts $1 billion on the line in his crusade to expose multi-level marketing giant Herbalife as a massive pyramid scheme. Herbalife claims Ackman’s a market manipulator smearing the company to drive the stock price down so he can make a fortune. But Ackman insists Herbalife deliberately targets low-income and immigrant communities and robs them of their life savings. Herbalife is aided on the counterattack by longtime Ackman nemesis and fellow Wall Street billionaire Carl Icahn, while Ackman finds an unlikely ally in Chicago activist Julie Contreras, who rallies the Latino community to get the federal government to intervene. Merging tales of high-stakes corporate intrigue with working-class people caught in the crossfire, Braun paints a stirring picture of the American Dream gone wrong.

“The way Betting On Zero interweaves the different aspects of this Herbalife saga is an incredible feat, ” said Gunpowder & Sky’s EVP of Distribution Janet Brown. “It’s a fascinating treatment of a complex issue and a clear-eyed, big-hearted look at the way corporate intrigue in the board room affects everyday people in the street.”

Director Ted Braun adds: “What started as an exploration of money, fraud and the American Dream evolved into a look at the equally important – if endangered  – place that facts, justice and effective regulatory government have in the fabric of our national identity. In the current political climate, the ways the characters in our film engage these questions and protect the genuine promise of the country matter more than ever.”

BETTING ON ZERO’s theatrical release, which will coincide with National Consumer Protection Week, comes after Herbalife’s settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the summer of 2016, requiring Herbalife to pay $200 million and fundamentally restructure its business. The FTC hopes the settlement will serve as a model to transform the ever-controversial multi-level marketing industry.  In January 2017, the FTC began mailing checks to nearly 350,000 victims of the multi-level marketing scheme.

Multi-level marketing (MLM) companies distribute products and services through networks of independent recruits who are encouraged to recruit others to do the same. Each recruit earns a percentage of any “downline” sales generated by the individuals that they recruit. MLM distributors make most of their money not from actually selling product to retail customers, but rather from signing up new recruits. Whether they’re a legitimate form of business or pyramid schemes built upon the transfer of money from an endless chain of recruits is at the center of cases investigated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
