'Independence Day 2': Dean Devlin Talks Blockbuster Sequel 1

Welcome to Earth. Again. Sixteen years after “Independence Day” made Will Smith into a superstar, co-writer Dean Devlin tells THR.com that plans for the sequel are slowly coming into focus.

“We resisted doing the sequel for years because we still wanted to honor the first one. The first one gave us all careers and we really love that movie and loved the experience,” he said in a new interview. Now, Devlin — who wrote the first film with director Roland Emmerich — says that the code has been cracked on part two.

“I feel like we got it. I think it took a long time, but I feel like we finally got something that really feels like, ‘That’s worth seeing as a sequel to ‘Independence Day.'”

The first “Independence Day” was a massive phenomenon. Released before 3D surcharges and the popularization of IMAX, the film still managed to gross $817 million worldwide. Twentieth Century Fox has been hot on producing a sequel to the film for quite some time. Back in October of 2011, Vulture reported that Fox was hoping to push two “Independence Day” sequels into production — with or without Smith as the star. Whether Smith returns is unclear, but it wouldn’t be the first time the actor went back to a franchise after a prolonged absence: He appeared in “Bad Boys II” eight years after the original film, and “Men In Black 3” ten years after “Men In Black 2.”
