A suspect has been arrested after allegedly breaking into the Beverly Hills home of actress Sandra Bullock while she was sleeping.
Police are said to have officially classified the incident as a “hot prowl burglary,” because the star was in the property at the time, although because of her high profile status they are also investigating the possibility that the suspect could be a stalker.
He was detained at around 6.30am (2.30 BST), law enforcement sources told NBC News, and is said to be aged 39 and to live locally. Police were on the scene within four minutes of the alarm being raised.
Bullock, 49, bought the seven-bedroom, eight bathroom mansion with views of the LA skyline in 2011 for $16.2 million (£9.6 million). Set on four acres, it has a tennis court, pool, separate guesthouse, gym and a private screening room.
Muria Vanegas of the Los Angeles Police Department said the man was in the yard “checking out the house” when police arrived. He did not enter the property and the Oscar winner was unharmed.
One of the highest-paid actresses in the world following the success of such hits as Speed, Miss Congeniality and The Blind Side, for which she won the Academy Award, Bullock lives with her adopted son, Louis, four, following her divorce from television host Jesse James in 2010.
The actress has been forced to take restraining orders out against at least two stalkers in the past, including a woman who tried to run over James in 2007 and a man who repeatedly travelled across the US to find her after being released from a mental institution.
Last year, Bullock obtained a temporary restraining order against Thomas James Weldon, 46, who is alleged to have been stalking her since 2003.
The night before the break-in, the actress had taken to the stage at Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards to receive a “Decade of Hotness” award from actors Hugh Hugh Grant, Keanu Reeves and Matthew McConaughey, who have all co-starred with her.
Police said the suspect was in custody awaiting charges. People Magazine later identified the suspect as Joshua Corbett. Miss Bullock’s representative told the magazine: “An intruder was arrested on [her] property this morning.”
